“Aren’t my words like fire?” 2023 Jewish Educator Award recipient Rabbi Avraham Berman, a Judaic studies teacher at Yavneh Hebrew School, imparts the verse that fuels his work as an educator, invoking the symbolism between the spark of learning in a classroom and lighting a menorah. “It’s not enough to just light the flame,” he says. “The flame needs to rise on its own, to stand independently. The goal is that the student comes to recognize on his own the value of what’s being transmitted. Every day I get up there with a flame and extend it.” He thanks his school administrators for providing him with the support to “transmit the flame, mold the hearts and make the connections.”
