JEA Award recipient Kelly Shepard, who chairs the performing arts program at Milken Community Schools, starts his remarks with a quote from Plato: “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” At Milken, Shepard directs Broadway-style musicals, teaches music theory, and directs both the concert choir and Kol Echad, Milken’s a cappella group, which has won international prizes. “I love teaching music because I’m teaching students to think outside the box with confidence,” he says.
